Be Counted

It is the duty of citizens to contribute along with the civil authorities to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom. The love and service of one’s country follow from the duty of gratitude and belong to the order of charity. Submission to legitimate authorities and service of the common good require citizens to fulfill their roles in the life of the political community. (CCC 2239)

Inform to Form

My job is to inform, not to convince. – St. Bernadette

As baptized Christianswe have a greater responsibility and obligation now, perhaps more than years past, not to convince and coerce, but to courageously and charitably inform for the purpose of forming the conscience of fellow citizens in Truth.

We must put on the mind of Christ that we would wisely distinguish light and darkness, right and wrong, truth and lies.

Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:1)

We’re in a very complex war for the soul of our nation. We must choose a side – the side of God – to preserve the existing good and oppose the greater evil. Indifference or neutrality is not a winning place on the battlefield.

But Neither Candidate is Perfect

What if none of the candidates are completely pro-life? As Pope John Paul II explains in his encyclical, Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), “…when it is not possible to overturn or completely abrogate a pro-abortion law, an elected official, whose absolute personal opposition to procured abortion was well known, could licitly support proposals aimed at limiting the harm done by such a law and at lessening its negative consequences at the level of general opinion and morality. This does not in fact represent an illicit cooperation with an unjust law, but rather a legitimate and proper attempt to limit its evil aspects.” Logically, it follows from these words of the Pope that a voter may likewise vote for that candidate who will most likely limit the evils of abortion or any other moral evil at issue. – A Brief Catechism for Catholic Voters #8

Abstain and Abandon

In the morals of politics it is generally said that not voting is bad. It is not good [to abstain], you have to vote and you have to choose the lesser evil. Who is the lesser evil?  – Pope Francis (CatholicVote.org)

Abstaining with intent to protest and not casting a legitimate vote to oppose the greater evil will only inflict harm on society by omission and bolster the Culture of Death. In abstaining from our moral obligation to vote, we end up voting for someone indirectly.

To abstain is to abandon the outcome to the rulers, the authorities, the powers of this dark world and the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12)

Writing in “Christ the King” on a ballot will not sway an election. Pray and fast then cast your vote in the holy the name of Jesus.

We must do our part that God would honor our cooperation in this process and mitigate the chaos that would befall us as the sin of our nation deserves.

Abandon the Faith?

He is a murderer from the beginning, a liar and the father of lies. There is no truth in him (John 8:44) and he wants us to believe that we don’t have to abandon our faith to support abortion aka “reproductive freedom.” That’s a lie.

This is not about loyalty to a single party. This is about faithfulness to the promises of our Baptism in Christ.

Do you reject Satan? And all his works? And all his empty promises?

This is about unwavering fidelity to God’s Commandments – the firm foundation of true freedom and the sure way to salvation.

Thou shall not kill. (Exodus 20:13)

Who’s to Judge?

It is only right…that at all times and in all places, the Church should have true freedom to preach the faith, to teach her social doctrine, to exercise her role freely among men, and also to pass moral judgment in those matters which regard public order when the fundamental rights of a person or the salvation of souls require it. (Gaudium et Spes, no. 76

Who’s to judge extreme ideological evil for what it is?

Who’s to oppose the support and the implementation of that which will set fire to public order and strip our fundamental rights as citizens and children of God?

Who’s to say that enshrining abortion rights into national law is intrinsically evil – a grave affront to human dignity – and an existential threat to the salvation of souls?

Who’s to declare that such an anti-gospel agenda is contrary to natural law and, therefore, indisputably incompatible with Catholic moral teaching?

We Are

The Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus’ message. Lovingly received day after day by the Church, it is to be preached with dauntless fidelity as “good news” to the people of every age and culture. – Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, no.1

It is the mission and, indeed, the moral responsibility of the Church and every baptized member of the Body of Christ to bear public witness to the Truth.

At this particular time, abortion has become the fundamental human rights issue for all men and women of good will. …. For us abortion is of overriding concern because it negates two of our most fundamental moral imperatives: respect for innocent life, and preferential concern for the weak and defenseless.  – Resolution on Abortion (1989)

Fear is useless. We must be torchbearers of Truth. You are the light of the world. (Matthew 5:14)

A Voice for the Voiceless

No one is exempt. Unlike Cain and the Culture of Death, we are our brother’s keeper!

Priests, pastors, and laity, as citizens and children of God, are compelled by the Gospel of life to be the light of Christ that dispels the darkness of lawlessness, delusion and death in all seasons and in all places from the pews to the polls.

Every Christian and person of good will must unite to take a national stand in defense of the most vulnerable and defenseless members of the human family.

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. (Proverbs 31:8-9)

Make Responsible Choices

Freedom is certainly an inalienable and basic human right, but for all that is not characterized by the possibility of being able to choose evil.Pope John Paul II Address, 6 June, 1988

We must exercise our God-given free will and our civic freedom responsibly.

I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children [and your children’s children] may live. (Deuteronomy 30:18)

Mary Immaculate…Give grace to the citizens of this land so that they will choose leaders according to the Sacred Heart of Thy Son, that His glory may be made manifest, lest we be given the leaders we deserve. 1. Thank you, brother! May our Mother wrap her mantle of Love around your family and press you to her Immaculate Heart and the Flame of Love! Please share this generously as the Spirit leads.

    2. Thank you, Brian! Finally, we have a strong voice issuing what we Catholics know we must do without cowering. The greater good is most evident.

Withholding a vote allows someone else’s vote to have more weight. It would be a cowardly act to sit on out hands and allow evil to win out and destroy our God-given country! As Catholics, we need to brighten our lamps for all to see!! NOW IS THE TIME.

      1. Thank you, Rita! YES! Fear is useless. We must be torch bearers of Truth! Perhaps we should charitably ask those who intend to withhold a vote “Is abstaining in protest more civically irresponsible than morally virtuous?” Yes, we must stand to be counted “for such a time as this.” (Esther 4:14)

    1. Thank you, Albert! Let’s list them for our readers: Abortion, Human Cloning, Euthanasia (assisted suicide), Stem Cell Research, Homosexual “Marriage”

  3. Great topic Brian! I usually turn a blind eye regarding politics. However, when I heard one of the candidates tell a Christian spectator they were at the wrong forum, I knew who I must cast my vote for. Additionally, this same candidate champions pro-choice. Thank you so much for reminding us of our civil duty and I pray the LORD guide our leaders to follow his will and not that of man…
